Magnesium deficiency has been suggested as a factor contributing to the pathogenesis of several chronic diseases. a decline in magnesium status can bring about anorexia, nausea, muscluar weakness, lethargy and weight loss.

Both dysrhythmias and myocardial ischemia have been attributed to low magnesium i!ntakes. Food sources include green leafy vegetables, shellfish, soya flour, tea, coffee, nuts and cocoa. Highly refined and polished cereals have extremely low magnesium levels. KAVITHA SIMHA, RD
