Baryta Carbonica: The Developmental and Senility Remedy

Baryta Carbonica, prepared from barium carbonate, is a principal constitutional remedy for developmental delay at both ends of life — slow children and regressing elders. Farrington, Clarke, and Allen describe its timidity, glandular swelling, and recurrent tonsillitis.
What Is Baryta Carbonica?
Baryta Carbonica is a homeopathic remedy prepared from barium carbonate (BaCO₃), a naturally occurring mineral. Its constitutional action — documented extensively by Farrington, Clarke, and Allen — is one of the most specifically characterised in the materia medica. The remedy covers states of arrested development: children who are slow to walk, talk, and learn; adults who are timid and unable to make decisions; and elderly individuals who regress toward a second childhood of dependence and mental decline.
Key Characteristics
- Developmental delay in children — slow to walk, talk, and reach cognitive milestones
- Profound timidity — the child hides behind the mother; the adult cannot act without reassurance
- Recurrent tonsillitis — the tonsils enlarge repeatedly, often suppurating, and never fully resolve
- Glandular swellings — cervical lymph nodes, tonsils, and submandibular glands
- Senile regression — mental decline in the elderly with childlike dependence and memory failure
- Lack of self-confidence — refuses to act on their own judgment; seeks constant reassurance
- Cold sensitivity — the patient is chilly and worse in cold, damp weather
Mental Picture
The mental picture is among the most vivid in the materia medica. Farrington describes the Baryta Carbonica child as the most timid in the consulting room — hiding, not speaking, and clinging to the parent. Clarke and Allen both note the lack of self-confidence as a deep constitutional trait: the adult who cannot make the simplest decision without reassurance, who is embarrassed in company, and who cannot bear being laughed at. At the other end of life, this same timidity becomes senile regression — the patient becomes childlike again, dependent, and forgetful.
Physical Picture
Recurrent tonsillitis is the characteristic physical presentation in childhood — the tonsils enlarge, suppurate, and never fully subside between attacks. Cervical adenopathy accompanies the tonsillitis. The glands are consistently enlarged throughout the constitutional picture. The patient is chilly, worse in cold and damp, and better in warm conditions. The physical development is slow across all domains.
When Is It Considered?
Homeopaths may consider Baryta Carbonica when:
- A child is slow in developmental milestones — speech, walking, and cognition
- Profound timidity and hiding from strangers characterise the child's behaviour
- Recurrent tonsillitis with persistent cervical glandular enlargement is the chief physical complaint
- An adult cannot make decisions without reassurance and is easily embarrassed
- An elderly patient shows regressive mental decline with childlike dependence
